The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Finale

For five years we have seen extraordinary characters live, suffer and die in Mystic Falls however never before had we seem so many popular characters really meet the end. The town of mystic falls is famous for the dead being- well not so dead. For five years within the Vampire Diaries universe death never truly meant the end, however after the season 5 finale that all ended. Along with the other side and some of our favourite characters from The Vampire Diaries. Below I will deconstruct the main events of the apocalyptic finale.

The death of Damon Salvatore

Although rumours have flown around the internet and through social media sites, never did we truly think that Damon Salvatore would die. Actually die. With the other side no longer there those that die simply pass on (we presume) and there's no more intervention from friendly faces. With that in mind the basis of The Vampire Diaries had been altered in a way we have never seen before- there's no longer a Elena, Stefan and Damon love triangle. But what impact will this have on the show as a whole? Will Delena fans continue to support the show? How will Elena manage? Will she keep her emotions turned on? And what's in store for the other Salvatore brother, after 173 years there's going to be a few attachment problems there.

The best best-friend Lexi

The renowned best friend of Stefan Salvatore: Lexi Branson. Forever watching over Stefen after having been murdered by his brother, Lexi was the kindest and truest person ever to step foot in Mystic Falls. Her return was emotional and much needed for Stefen! However the belief that she would return to the living and again be with Stefan (platonically) and be his much needed go to girl, was the most heart breaking moment of Lexi's screen time. Refusing to step through the anchor and back into the living in case Bonnie was not strong enough to allow Damon to go through. She let herself truly die for the happiness of her bestfriend. Lexi died a hero.

The return of Alaric

Stefan has Lexi. Damon has Alaric. Some things are just set. However the return of Alaric to the land of the living was a brilliant surprise from the finale. After the death of not only Damon, but Bonnie also, god knows Elena and Jeremy Gilbert are going to need him!

Say goodbye to the Mystic-Grill

After blowing up the local resturaunt and bar, it's fair to say both Jeremy and Matt will be brushing up their cv's to find a new day job. The finale involved Sheriff Forbes holding a free bar to get all of the travellers in the same place- in order to blow them up! And it worked. Let's hope Matt and Jeremy were right in thinking the Salvatore fund will help rebuild the iconic grill. Also we can't forget the tear jerking moment when Elena decided to die with Damon driving through the building of a grill to start the explosion. Holding his hand and not even needing to say the words I love you. But simply "I know". They really did go out with a bang!

The Bennett promise

Finally the most cryptic part of the finale was Bonnie's Grams' goodbye speech. She explained that she had always looked after her and always would and that's why she wouldn't pass over to the land of the living. I got the sense that there was more to that than meets the eye. Could Bonnie transcend death and become and elder or a spirit? Or could Bonnie's Grams have done something that could again protect Bonnie? But surely she wouldn't be powerful enough to save Bonnie from the end, could she? That's the thing with witches, we never know.
